The Truth About Blackheads

Everything You Need to Know About Blackheads

Those who suffer from severe acne sometimes think that people who only suffer from blackheads have it easy. However, those who suffer from blackheads know the truth. Blackheads can be just as upsetting as any other form of acne. If you suffer from blackheads, here is some information that may help.

What Are Blackheads?

Contrary to what many people believe, blackheads are not just dirt-clogged pores. In fact, the "black" appearance of blackheads has nothing to do with dirt and everything to do with chemical reactions.

Blackheads are open comedones that have a wider opening than the follicles of the skin normally do. These follicles fill with sebum and dead skin cells. The larger opening allows the oxidation of the melanin in the skin, which gives the blackhead its dark color.

Is It Safe to Pop Blackheads

It's never "safe" to pop any pimple. That being said, it can sometimes be easier to pop blackheads due to their larger-than-usual openings. However, there are better ways to remove blackheads than the primitive squeezing of the skin.

There are a number of blackhead products on the market nowadays. Some claim to dissolve blackheads while others attempt to "pull" them out of the skin. I suggest removing only the blackheads that are ready to come out by using blackhead strips.

You can get the strips used to remove blackheads in most health and beauty departments. You apply the strip to your face, let it set and rip it off (kind of like waxing, but less severe). The blackhead comes out with the tape and if it doesn't, it's not ready to go.

Remember, blackheads are like any other blemish. If you get to aggressive with removal, it can lead to further skin irritation and even scarring.
