Should You use Isotretinoin To Treat Your Cystic Acne?

What You Need to Know about Isotretinoin

Anyone who's suffered from cystic acne knows that when it's at its worst, you'd be willing to do almost anything to get rid of it. Many turn to Isotretinoin. But is this really a wise way to treat your cystic acne? If you're considering Isotretinoin as a cystic acne treatment, this is what you need to know...

What is Isotretinoin?

Isotretinoin is the generic name for the prescription acne drug known as Accutane. It's generally only prescribed for severe acne conditions, such as cystic acne. Fortunately, it does offer relief. Most patients who take the medicine will be able to get rid of their acne in 15 to 20 weeks time.

That being said, however, there are somethings you need to know before taking Isotretinoin for your acne condition.

The Side Effects

Isotretinoin is not without its side effects. Some of the milder side effects include dry eyes, mouth, lips and nose. Other mild side effects range from itching to light sensitivity. Unfortunately, mild side effects are not the only side effects possible with Isotretinoin.

Although it is rare, some of the acne sufferers who take this drug may develop changes in liver function and you should NEVER take it if you plan on becoming pregnant. The drug has been linked to serious birth defects.

If you don't plan on becoming pregnant and you think Isotretinoin might be the answer to your cystic acne woes, you should really talk to your doctor or a dermatologist. They can help you determine if the medication is right for you and whether or not you're at high risk of developing some of the more severe side effects.

While Isotretinoin isn't without it's faults, it has proven beneficial to many cystic acne sufferers who haven't been able to find a natural remedy that works.
