It’s About More Than Just Looks

Acne can affect more than just your skin. Having acne is certainly detrimental. In addition to being unsightly, if you have severe acne such as cysts or nodules, you might even experience pain. Later on in life you might even have severe scarring that will serve as an unpleasant reminder of your experience with acne.

Acne can affect your social life and interactions with others as well and self esteem tends to take a beating when a person is experiencing acne breakouts.

Who’s Affected More?

It’s hard to say whether or not adults or teens are affected more by acne. For teens, their social lives often revolve around their appearance. Having acne can really serve to alienate a teen from his or her friends.

Adolescent males seem to have a tougher time than females. Firstly, males often tend to get more severe acne their female peers. Secondly, females have a better arsenal of defense because they are usually encouraged to wear makeup, and that’s just not a realistic option for teen boys.

Age-Appropriate Acne Care

There are some acne products that teens most often use but can often be used by adults. If you experience acne as an adult, you can use spot treatments such as Clearasil. However, there are some acne treatments that adults might use that would not be suitable for teens such as acne products that contain anti-aging ingredients.

Whether you are a teen or an adult acne sufferer, there is still an upper limit to the amount of times you cleanse and care for your face everyday. It’s usually recommended that you wash your face two to three times per day.

If you exercise or get very sweaty you should wash your face and shower as well. Ultimately, though, you should not over wash your face or scrub too hard. Both can contribute to your acne and make it worse. Acne care involves a delicate balance between treating enough but not treating too much.
