I want to wipe something on my face and have my acne vanish, my mom wants to take a pill and lose thirty pounds, my brother wants to get rich quick. But that's just not how life works.

Most problems have multipart solutions. Acne solutions are no different. Sure, for some lucky people, one specific product or form of acne skin care will work wonders. But for most of us, solving our acne issues is something that takes time and commitment.

All of the following things play a part in keeping your skin free and clear. The problem comes when we try to isolate them and claim that one thing is responsible for good health or curing acne or losing weight or what have you. These things working together are going to change your life, but one in isolation, while still good for you, isn't going to give you the results you're looking for.

1. Healthy Diet

Why it works: Eating healthy foods keeps your body in balance and gives your skin the vitamins and nutrients it needs.

Why it doesn't: People think that if they eliminate a few foods from their diet and go on some sort of crazy regiment they'll have instant acne free skin.

What you should really do: Eat a balanced diet. Allow yourself an occasional treat, but try to increase the amount of fruits, vegetables, whole grains, and lean proteins you consume.

2. Water

Why it works: Most of your body is water, and you need it to function.

Why it doesn't: Guzzling quarts of water at a time isn't going to accomplish anything besides making you spend a lot of time in the bathroom.

What you should do: Choose water over juice and soda and carry a water bottle with you.

3. Sleep

Why it doesn't: If only twelve hours of sleep could fix everything wrong with us... if only!

Why it doesn't: If you only treat acne as it occurs but don't address underlying causes, you won't really find long lasting acne solutions.

What you should do: By all means, use a medicated acne skin care product. But make sure you live as healthy as possible, too.
