Are Oral Contraceptives Really A Good Acne Treatment?

What You Need To Know About Oral Contraceptives and Acne

Commercials and advertisements have been insinuating that oral contraceptives may actually help aid those who suffer from acne, but is it true or just another hopeful myth? If you've been considering oral contraceptives due to an acne condition, there are some facts you need to consider.

They Are Not Acne Pills

First things first, you need to understand that oral contraceptives are not acne pills, they are birth control pills. They weren't designed to fight acne and unless you have a legitimate need for birth control, you shouldn't take them.

Do They Work?

Yes, some oral contraceptives help with some forms of acne, but it's not because they were developed with acne in mind. The oral contraceptives that help alleviate acne do so due to hormonal changes caused by the pill. If your acne isn't caused by hormones, then these birth control pills won't do a thing for you.

The Risks

If your acne is hormone related and you think these oral contraceptives will help, make sure you know full well what you're getting into before you try to get a prescription. Many of these oral contraceptives have potential side effects that make acne look like a walk in the park.

Some of the possible side effects experienced when taking oral contraceptives can include headache, mood swings, nausea, and weight gain. And if you still think acne is worse than being moody, nauseous, migraine-ridden and a few pounds heavier, there are even worse side effects to consider such as stroke, blood clots and heart attack.

It's true that not everyone who takes oral contraceptives for acne will develop side effects, but is it really worth the risk?

Proceed With Caution

If, even after knowing the potential risks, you think that oral contraceptives are an option you'd like to pursue and that the acne benefits are just an added bonus, then just be sure you proceed with caution. If you experience any side effects, don't hesitate to call your doctor. Many acne sufferers do benefit from oral contraceptives and you may indeed be one of them, but always err on the side of caution.

I have found that oral contraceptives have worked better than anything I've tried to get rid of my acne! I've tried soooo many things, and going on Yasmin has helped me so much! I still use different acne topical treatments, but can't imagine not having Yasmin!
