Addressing The Sensitive Subject of Genital Acne

What You Need to Know About Genital Acne

It's not an acne topic that is often touched upon, but the fact of the matter remains that countless people are affected by genital acne. Contrary to what popular opinion may be, genital acne is not an STD and it is nothing to be ashamed of. If you've been suffering from this acne condition, here's some helpful information.

You Didn't Catch It and It's Not Contagious

As I said before, genital acne is not contagious. This means you didn't catch it from anyone and you can't spread it to anyone else. It's not a disease, it's a skin condition. There are different reasons why genital acne develops, but STDs are not one of them.

What Causes Genital Acne?

The causes of genital acne are pretty similar to the causes of other forms of acne on the body. However, while facial acne involves the sebaceous glands genital acne involves the apocrine glands. When the pores or glands in your genital area clog, acne soon develops. This can be the result of excessive sweating, reactions to laundry detergents, irritation from clothing, etc.

How Can You Treat Genital Acne?

Not all acne treatments will be effective for genital acne. External medications meant to treat facial acne usually aren't suitable for genital acne purposes. First try cleansing daily with anti-bacterial soap. If that doesn't clear up the problem, you may want to seek the services of a dermatologist. He or she can prescribe any necessary medications.
