It’s also important to understand what types of acne scars there are and how they differ. Scars that are caused by increased tissue formation are called hypertrophic scars. Scars that are caused by tissue loss can include ice-pick scars, depressed fibrotic scars, and atrophic macules.

There are several different procedures, and each alone can be considered an acne scar treatment. Collagen injection is perhaps one of the more well-known treatments. Collagen is injected into the skin. This works to fill out the scars and make them less noticeable. This procedure does need to be repeated in three to six months, however.
Laser treatment is another option for those interested in an acne scar treatment. Laser treatment attempts to alter the scar tissue and reduce the redness of around healed acne lesions. Surgery is another option and is necessary for certain types of scars.
